Commencement May 2013

Today was a happy day for these Pi Gamma Mu Delaware BETA Chapter members! The smiles on their faces say it all!
Judy P. (below) was doubly happy, as she graduated from the graduate counselling program!
So she's wearing her PGM cords for a happy second time!
Congratulations to Dayna L. (shown above with the Chair of the Board of Trustees Mr. DuPont) for being selected as our commencement speaker! Her commencement address did us all proud today.

AND, if that was not enough, congrats to Paula L. (below) who was awarded the student service award today! Sorry I could only get a picture from the back, but here is Paula accepting the award from the Board of Trustees..

Congratulations to all-- so proud of the Mu at Wilmu!!!

Alumni Group Wine Tasting Event

Last night the Alumni Group hosted a wine tasting event at the heritage Vineyard winery in New Jersey.
It was fun to see so many Pi Gamma Mu Alumns present as we all enjoyed a good time sampling various wines!

The Power of Networking Event

Last month, the Pi Gamma Mu Delaware BETA Chapter alumni group hosted their first ever Power of Networking event.
Guest speakers, alumns, and current students showed up and learned to get to know each other as the networked professional connections...
Fantastic food was catered by Second Chance Catering of the Hospitality School, a non-profit started by one of our own PGM alums!
Former PGM BETA Officers Jerome (above, right) and Judy (below, right) were there to show their support!
This event was so successful that plans are already underway for next year!
Go Pi Gamma Mu at Wilmu!!!

Service Projects

I participated in the Susan G Komen 3 Day walk in October 2012. A 3 day 60 mile journey in hopes of finding a cure for breast cancer. My team and I put together a benefit dinner, sold sub tickets, put together a yard sale and many hours of training to raise money for breast cancer. Although we did not walk for anyone person in particular, we decided that we were walking for the "little ladies of the future" so our children hopefully one day can live in a world that is cancer free. The journey was not an easy one at all, it was filled with many emotions. A sense of accomplishment ran through me when I crossed the finish line and knew I walked 60 miles. one of the famous sayings during the 3 day walk is "BLISTERS DON'T NEED CHEMO!!!!"

Service Project

I did my service project hours at the Shepherd Place.  For those of you who are not familiar with the agency, it is a homeless shelter for women and children.  I completed the project over the course of three days. My duties included, sorting clothing and food, a case management intake, and visiting with the residents.

I have a strong desire to help for
these individuals, because they tend to be shunned from society.  Many of them are the victims of domestic violence, loss of employment, or they simply made the wrong choices.  While some may not want to better themselves, others try very hard to turn their situation around and make a better life for themselves and their children.  This is the third time I have worked with the homeless and found each opportunity rewarding. For confidentiality reasons, I was unable to share photos of my experience. ~M.

Service Project

In October, I took an amazing journey with my cousin and millions of others as we walked 60 miles in 3 days in an effort to find a cure for breast cancer.  This was the most amazing 3 days as millions of strangers became a family as we walked and pushed ourselves to the limit.  While the walk was challenging, not to mention the temperature being in the teens, it was worth the while.  I even registered to do it again this year! Let me know if you would like to join me in this journey!!! ~Ashley

Service Projects

Dena is the NC Chapter Secretary and participated in the Polar Bear Plunge...

I recently had the opportunity to conduct volunteer service hours with Stand By Me - under the parent company of The Delaware Financial Empowerment Partnership.  On Saturday, February 23, 2013, I attended the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) sessions from 9 am to 12 noon.  I assisted students and parents in filling out the FAFSA application.  This was an exciting and fulfilling time as I watched high school students and current college students continue with their desire in fulfilling their education.

I volunteered 10 hours to Alpha Worship Center's Day of Koinonia, plus an extra 2 hours for the final planning meeting. Koinonia means fellowship. On May 5th, Alpha Worship Center fellowshipped with the community through food, fun, entertainment, and information to build relationships. We had various vendors in attendance and a wonderful concert with a few area artists. My duties involved setting up and breaking down and manning the welcome station. It was beautiful day by way of weather and events. I look forwarding to participating in Day of Koinonia 2013

Polar Bear Plunge 2013

The 2013 plunge brought snow on the beach... ...and colder temps than the year before.........Wilmu had a breezy presence on the beach as we were the first to stake out our banner! Many thanks to Pete and Stephanie S. for doing this for us every year! The gang gathered at our Rehoboth site for a group picture, and you can see that among the 16 registered plungers this year, (which was more than 100% more than last year) we also had so many supporters who were our "beach towel holders" and cheerleaders ready to cheer us into those frigid waters. ... ............>...This year we were able to provide warm fleece scarves for the registered plungers......and in one case, a daughter adjusted the scarf on her dad just so that the Wilmu embroidery would show. Susan, who drove all the way from souther NJ to participate, proudly shows off her PGM sweatshirt............Susan C. keeps up with the Firstgiving website to see what our total fundraising is up to. As one of our Pennsylvaia students, she drove down all the way from NE Philadelphia to participate! ...... How do you like her polar bear mittens? ... Alumni Chapter members showed up in force to support us-- Three cheers for the Alums and their furry friends! ... The wet suit guys test the waters before the plungers are allowed in, and you can see how quickly the waters is deep-- guess that's the effects of winter storm erosion... ...... A very excited Dena shows her joy at accomplishing her first ever plunge! ...... The Delaware BETA Chapter raised over $2500.00 for this year's plunge!
